Transfiguration Sunday

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear RFUMC Family

Peace is a gift from God and our response because of God's love. It comes into being by seeking justice and loving each other. We can pray; let's pray for Ukraine. Today, I want to share the letter from Bishop Christian Alsted. Bishop Alsted serves in the Central Conference that consists of Nordic, Baltic and Eurasian countries, including Russia and Ukraine, is offering the following pastoral words on the crisis in Ukraine.

Pastoral letter in light of the tragic events in Ukraine

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

There is war in Europe, Russia has invaded Ukraine, which is a free independent democracy. War and violence are evil and always entail considerable human costs. The Christian message points to the path of reconciliation and never to war and violence, as a solution to conflicts. In the face of this evil, we pray for a logic different from the one based on geopolitical competition. We pray for a change of hearts and minds of leaders, we pray for de-escalation and dialogue instead of violence and war.
The Social Principles of the Methodist Church say: "We deplore war and urge the peaceful settlement of all disputes among nations. From the beginning, the Christian conscience has struggled with the harsh realities of violence and war, for these evils clearly frustrate God's loving purposes for humankind. We yearn for the day when there will be no more war and people will live together in peace and justice.

Our central conference consists of Nordic, Baltic and Eurasian countries, including Russia and Ukraine. The Christian Church is not nationalistic and our relations with our brothers and sisters in other countries are not limited by nationality or culture. We have deep relations with Methodists in Ukraine and in Russia, and although we are influenced by our culture and the political realities, we must never allow this to hinder or break our unity in Christ.
We stand with the United Methodists in Ukraine in prayer for protection, reconciliation and peace. We pray for pastors, leaders and congregations in the United Methodist Church in Ukraine; may God grant that their witness of reconciliation and peace will bring strength and hope to the Ukrainian people.
We pray for Bishop Eduard Khegay, bishop of both Russia and Ukraine, may God give him the wisdom and grace that he needs in his ministry and leadership under these challenging circumstances.
In the Nordic and Baltic episcopal area, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania all have borders with Russia, and in addition Latvia and Lithuania have borders with Belarus. In the Baltic states in particular, the invasion of Ukraine causes great concern.

The United Methodists in the Nordic countries stand with the Methodists in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in prayer for protection and peace. May the Church's testimony of reconciliation and peace in Christ offer hope and strength to the people in the Baltic countries.
In the coming week we will enter the season of Lent, which in the church is a time for prayer and soul-searching. I call on all our congregations to intercede for the people of Ukraine, and for the leaders in the world, who have the power to bring an end to war. I call on all our congregations to pray and fast for reconciliation and peace in the world. May God, in his grace, open our eyes to the things that make for peace, may He protect us all from the escalation and spreading of war, and may we follow Him on His path of truth and peace.
May Christ have mercy on us all.

Christian Alsted

Join the NIC Book Club this Lent

What kind of experience do you have in your prayer life? Is it full of joy or does it fall flat? Gary Neal Hansen, author of the Discipleship Task Force's first selection for the NIC Book Club, suggests if your experience is the latter, conceivably you haven't found a prayer method that you really connect with.

In his book, "Kneeling with Giants," Hansen offers a wide range of approaches to prayer that are all classics. What better time than Lent to search out a deeper relationship with the God who so loved the world…? Join the Discipleship Task Force in dropping to our knees by joining a group this Lenten Season. The season of Lent begins with a call to repent, which means to "turn around." This year, we will turn from our apathy, turn from simply "going through the motions" of our life and worship. Instead' we will pray to be active instruments of peace, agents of change in the world. We begin the journey toward renewing our baptismal identity as the hands and feet of Christ by "re-cognizing"–tuning our minds and hearts toward the world and its peoples.

Please join us on Ash Wednesday (March 2, 2022) for an online worship service beginning at 7:00 pm.  Here is the Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87092959082

Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear RFUMC Family

At last week's sunday worship, we talk about the love and kind of love languages. Love is God's main character, and not only Christianity, love is common theme for universal religion.

According to Buddhism, there are four elementary of true love. Not only one, but there are also four elements of true love.

The first elements is "MAITRI" which can be translated; "Loving-Kindness" / "Benevolence"
It is desire to make someone happy and bring joy to be loved person. Thich Naht Hanh said in his book "True Love" "it is the ability to bring joy and happiness to the person you love, because even of your intention is to love this person, your love might make the person suffer."

I think this is primary element of love. Because for reach to the Loving-Kindness, we need to understand the person first.  Also, Thich Naht Hanh explains that the understanding possible by practice deep looking the person.

Second element of true love is compassion, "KARUNA" this is not only the desire to east eh pain of another person but the ability to do so. The concept is KARUNA is Buddhist term but in the Bible, we observe a lot from Jesus's healing ministry. God's love toward us that wants us free from our Sin. God know us fully, God knows our mind form bottom, and when we have scarves in there, God want to heal us from our hurt.

Third element of true love is joy – "Mudita".  Thich Naht Hanh emphasize that if there is no joy love, it is not true love. If you are suffering all the time, if you cry all the time and if you make the person, you love cry, this is not really love – it is even the opposite.
The third element think about our ministry. If we says "We love our neighbor" and we put a lot of effort and time to the ministry but actually it cause no joy at all, even makes everyone feel hard and tired then how we can call that we doing ministry in love?

The fourth element is "UPEKSHA" can be translate to equanimity or freedom. In true love we attain freedom. When you love, you bring freedom to the person you love. If there are no freedom, then it could not be called "Love" I think fourth element is very important to us who live Pandemic life. If we could not give enough space to our dear one how we could not have enough space for ourselves?

As we celebrate Valentin's day, I want to share wisdom of Love with you.

Soon, Lenten season is coming, for me Lenten season is remembering God's love and grace, Jesus Christ who one love us so much so willing to give everything for us.

Love is being there.

I will see you all.

With love- Mori

80th Year After EO9066

Email from NJAUMC Chair Rev. Karen Yokota Love

On February 19, 2022, it's been 80 Years since Executive Order 9066 was issued -- the order that gave way to the forced removal and mass incarceration of 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry. May we never forget and may we continue to be reminded of the impact the incarceration experience has had on our families, our community and our country. May we take these opportunities to educate others on the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis, and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of all. May we speak prophetically and seek justice, walk humbly and love our neighbor as ourselves.
