Message from Pastor Mori Dear RFUMC Family As we approach the season of Lent, I invite you to think about the meaning of Lent. For me, Lent is a time for self-examination, repentance, and renewal. I was curious what John Wesley taught about the meaning of Lent. He taught that it is a time for us to turn away from sin and turn towards God to deepen our relationship with God and grow in grace. This season is an opportunity for us to humble ourselves, confess our shortcomings, and seek forgiveness. I am pleased to announce that the Northside Co-op has prepared the Lenten Worship series "The Wilderness", which will guide us through this season of spiritual reflection and growth. In addition, each church has prepared a special Lenten worship service and discernment, providing opportunities for us to deepen our faith and connect with one another. There are many ways to participate in Lent, and I encourage you to find what works best for you. One opportunity is to join RFUMC'S Lent Morning Prayer. From Thursday February 23 through Good Friday, April 7, we will have a daily (No Weekend, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM) morning prayer and meditation via Zoom. The Zoom online link will be provided and this year we have also purchased an E-book for meditation which will be sent to you via email. Another way to participate in Lent is through our Lenten offering. In an effort to participate in Jesus's suffering we invite you to give whatever brings you extra delight, such as chocolate, coffee... We invite you to make an offering instead of purchasing those things. An offering box is prepared in the sanctuary. For the online Zoom users, we will enclose a box in this envelope. Please bring your box back on Easter and we will donate those offerings to the Discipleship Ministries: Coins for Lent. You can also participate in Sunday Discernment with the Northside Co-op pastors. This is an opportunity for you to reflect on the teachings of the Lenten season and to deepen your spiritual growth. Finally, I encourage you to join us for worship. Here is the joint Lent worship schedule with locations: In Person + Zoom online Feb 22. Ash Wednesday Worship United Church of Rogers Park (7:00PM) April 06. Holy Thursday Worship Big Shoulder Church (Time TBA) April 07. Good Friday Worship Ravenswood Fellowship UMC (Time TBA) As we gather together to worship, let us be reminded of the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the redemption Jesus offers to all who believe in God. In this season of Lent, let's have a chance to turn inward, draw closer to God, and serve others. As we reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the hope of his resurrection, may we be renewed in our faith and strengthened in our commitment to living a life of holiness. As we journey through this holy season, may the grace of our Lord be with always. Blessings. Mori |
