Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church The Weekly Newsletter    Message from Pastor Mori When I was a freshman at university, I was invited to a volunteer group. They taught high school students who could not go to school because of poverty. They needed to go to work to take care of their family. Before I met them, I never imagined how many teens give up their school (Even though Korea's public high schools are free.) and how many students choose to work instead of study. I taught them History and Korean until they were able to take the Korean SAT.    When I moved to the USA, the most fascinating thing was America's educational system, and its richness of resources, and an excellent educational environment. When I went to Target's back to school section, I just say "Wow! This is like student heaven!" And I got several cute notes for meager prices and some pencils for my academic year at seminary. It is still true for some students. Yes, I believe that still, Evanston's Target will be full of school supplies, and parents will be busy ordering backpacks of school materials.    However, it is not this way for all of the students. Some students struggle; they live in a tiny apartment with many family members. There is no cute little table set up in the room with an iPad and computer. For some students, this is the harshest academic year. They need to share their computer in classes with siblings. Some of their parents could not offer any of the school supplies because they lost their job due to the pandemic. Some students need to care for their young siblings and use their afterschool hours to work to help their families. To them, the new academic year and shopping for backpacks and school supplies is a story from another world.   The Chicago Tribune wrote about recent research that showed "the number of people ages 16 to 24 who are disconnected from both work and school could spike to almost one in four, erasing a decade of gains and hitting levels higher than the Great Recession." This is a crisis. As individuals, there are not many ways to help them, but as a church, let's help them, at least send some school supplies for them, so they don't need to worry about their notes and pencils!    Last week, I received several delivery boxes from Staples and other retail shops. Thank you so much for your donations. We are still collecting back to school donations for the "Kids Above All," program.  You can order online, or call to the retail shops, and have them delivered to the church. It is very true, but the church never loses hope in Christian history. Please send your children's art drawing or grandchildren's art drawing to show hope to our neighborhood. We will exhibit the drawings outside of the church. The pictures could be about family, friends, or their dreams or flowers, trees, and animals, or anything that shows hope.  Please look at the poster for the information. The due date is Sunday, Sep 13. More information, please email Pastor Mori email  Voting and Rights Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Illinois allows any voter to request a ballot by mail. This is a new way to vote and looks complicated. Sarah W. will help us understand what it is and how we can use the mail to vote. If you want to learn about this please stay after worship on Sunday, Aug 23. Backpack Blessings Aug 29 Saturday 10:30 AM This academic year is tough for both students and parents as they need to take online classes. Also, it is a hard situation for teachers and school staff. As a church, we want to bless and support our students and parents and teachers and school staff.    Meet outside the church on the Hermitage side to receive this blessing. We will be doing this blessing with Berry United Methodist Church. (Rev. Matthew Krings) Please look at the poster for the information.  We will have a chance to pray and bless the backpacks. We plan to give a mini sanitizer to all students who come. School supplies are an expense that many of our families have difficulty affording. The Back to School Drive is underway and our kids need your help to make sure they are ready to learn--no matter where and how they do it! In addition to the effects of the pandemic, the economy, and whether the rising momentum against racism will produce change, we all have experienced personal concerns with family, friends, transitions, and lost celebrations.
