Pet Blessing

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear Ravenswood Fellowship family,

Thank you so much for your prayer for my sabbatical vacation. I took time to rest, meditate, and pray. During my short meditation time at the retreat center,   I realized again the beauty of nature and love.

A blessing of animals in many denominations of the church is considered witness to God's and the Church's love. Blessing is a way to show care and concern for creation. I agree with the Rev. Tanya Eustace who while serving with Discipleship Ministries said that, "I think it's really important for United Methodist church congregations to recognize the role that animals play in some people's lives. We, as United Methodists, say that we don't believe that animals have souls. What we're really saying is animals do not or are not in the need of God's redemption and forgiveness, like humans are. Instead, what we affirm when we bless animals in the church is that they are part of God's good creation." (https://www.umc.org/en/content/how-pets-bless-human-souls) We recognize our mutual interdependence with God's creatures.

Pets are God's gift for us. A study recently showed that there are two key points of success in life.
The first element is love, the other is work ethic, both of which are related by the importance of relationships. Dr. Robert Waldinger who ran the study for years said, "Good relationships keep us happier and healthier."[1]
Pets give us the chance to show care and nurture. We also have full relationships with them.

A University of Western Australia study of 1,646 households with preschool-age kids found that "young kids with dogs wound up with better self-esteem, a higher level of personal responsibility, and autonomy"[2]

Having a pet is a benefit to both kids and adults. Blessing them is one way to give thanks to God for allowing us to have them. The pet blessings tradition originated from the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, (October 04, 2020) who spoke with animals. The United Methodist Church also adopted the tradition, and our Book of Worship recommends the use of "A Service for the Blessing of Animals."

This upcoming Saturday, October 3 at 10:00 AM, Ravenswood Fellowship will have a pet blessing service. This year I invited the Franciscan Priest, Father Edward, who is serving at St. Peter's Church in the Loop. We will be presiding over the pet blessing together.

It is an outdoor service that we will have at the front of the church, the Hermitage Avenue side. We will not touch your pet and main social distance while giving the blessing. Please bring your pet or a picture of your pet.
Even if you don't have a pet, please come and let's give thanks to God for good relationships, care, and love with one another!

With Love
Pastor Mori

Pet Blessing

A Blessing of Animals, in many congregations, witnesses to God's and the Church's love, care, and concern for creation. As we recognize our mutual interdependence with God's creatures, the Church's witness of stewardship of creation is strengthened.

The tradition of pet blessing originated from the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. This year Ravenswood Fellowship UMC has invited a Franciscan priest from St. Peter's in the Loop Church to share in our pet blessing.
Pastor Mori and the Franciscan Priest bless pets.

Date and time: October 03 Saturday, 10:00 AM
Place: Hermitage side of Ravenwood Fellowship UMC

Bible Study

Pastor Mori is writing the Bible study lessons and a Leader's Guide on the Gospel of Luke and the loneliness. During the pandemic, we have been isolated and faced with an uncertain future. As we live with the crisis, people have lost the chance to form relationships with other people and we have been forced to deal with our own loneliness. The Bible lesson will focus on how the Bible teaches us to handle our loneliness.

Last session- October 08 Thursday 7:00-8:00 PM Zoom online                    (Meeting ID: 767 300 8300)     https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7673008300

World Communion Sunday

October 04 Sunday is World Communion Sunday!
World Communion Sunday offers congregations a distinctive opportunity to experience Holy Communion in the context of the global community of faith. The first Sunday of October has become a time when Christians in every culture break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Christ as the Head of the Church. (www.globalministries.org)

Pumpkin Spice Cinema Club

Do you like movies? I love movies!

If you like movies and pumpkin spice tea, please join the Ravenswood Fellowship Church Pumpkin Spice Cinema Club. From October 22 to November 19, we will have a cinema club with five movies through Zoom online.

Movies are a visual art form with story and characters and music: there are so many forms of art and so many ideas and perceptions that reflect our world! These five movies will allow us to talk about social justice issues such as racism, justice, and global warming. Also, we will talk about the love and beauty of relationships.

If you want to be on the panel to pick the movie and help me prepare questions, please join a "Preview," on Thursday, Oct 15, from 7:00 to 8:00. The link is here:  (Meeting ID: 883 6694 3163)

Laity Sunday
October 18 Sunday

Methodism has a long history celebrating and recognizing the ministry of the laity. It is important to say to the Ravenswood Fellowship family, "This church is your church."  We always work together as a faith community and without lay leaders, we would not be called the church. In the early days of American Methodism, the laity served and maintained congregations between visits of the circuit riders. Today, laypeople are the front line of daily ministry at the workplace, in the home, and within the community.

Laity Sunday is celebrated on the Third Sunday of October in the Methodist tradition. I want to invite you to an October 18th celebration of Laity Sunday to give thanks to our lay leaders. We will take the time to introduce our lay leaders and share their work. This year they have needed to work with two new pastors under the pandemic situation.

We need the whole Body of Christ as we seek to become a more vital congregation who makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world!
