Fifthth Sunday After Epiphany

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

We received a message from Brittany Isaac, our District Superintendent, which I am sharing with you this week.

Dear Pastor and Leaders of Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church,

I greet you all in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

What an extremely difficult year it has been and yet, I find myself grateful for some of the things that have come out of Covid. One such thing is a strengthening of our connectionalism as United Methodists. In our need to learn new skills, like video editing and zoom Bible studies, we have connected with our fellow congregations and colleagues for help and support. It has been absolutely beautiful to witness.

Another way that we live out our connectionalism is through the apportionment, a Biblical model for sharing our resources with one another. I received the 2020 apportionment report and   feel such gratitude for your church's effort and commitment in paying the apportionments. The year 2020 was a financially difficult time and I know that finances may have been tight. Your commitment to the apportionment has contributed to the conference's health and mission, which means that you have supported the health and mission of all of our local churches.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your apportionment payment in 2020

We continue navigating an uncertain and challenging time as a church, but please remember that we are in this together. We are connectional!! Please let me know if I can be helpful. May God continue strengthening your commitment to serve God and to make a difference in your community.

In Christ,
Rev. Brittany Isaac

The United Methodist Church joins with others in celebrating February as Black History Month, the annual observance of the history of the African diaspora. And, it is a time to reflect on the history of Black Americans and to honor the individuals and groups who have worked tirelessly toward racial justice. As we embark on Black History Month, I want to share poems during February.

Well, Mother, allow me the opportunity thank you,
Because you fought for me to have life on a crystal stair.
But even the crystal stair was a lil' rough
Though there were no tacks, it had cracks in the glass that scrape your feet
And, no, there weren't splinters, but the shattered pieces and broken-off glass were just as piercing.
But I saw you, Mama, and like you, all the time
I've been a climbin' on – even when people said I didn't belong
And reachin' new heights – while seeing my reflection in the glass behind and before me
And turnin' corners on the revolving stair, to learn that every round really does go higher and higher
And the higher we got, ma, instead of it getting lighter, the stairs got dimmer,
And it seemed surrounding souls got darker instead
And I had to be the one that represented the light.
So, Ma, I won't turn my back; I'll just reach high and pull forward,
And, I promise, I won't sit because the glass is too cold for my warm spirit, anyways.
So I'ma keep goin,' mama, just like you said.
And I'ma keep climbing, mama, just like you did.
And tellin' you thank you, for fighting
for me to even be on the crystal stair.

Lent Bible Study Book

This Lent ponder the themes of justice, poverty, freedom, and love.

Victor Hugo's Les Misérables is a truly epic story. Whether you've read the novel, seen the Broadway musical, heard its soundtrack, or seen the several screen adaptations, you already know the power in the story. In the six-week Lenten study The Grace of Les Misérables, author and pastor Matt Rawle dives into six ideals found in the story—grace, justice, poverty, revolution, love, and hope—each represented by a character in Hugo's story. In keeping with his previous works, Rawle brings us to the intersection of Church and Pop Culture by drawing parallels between the iconic story and musical and our Christian calling, inspiring us to both understand our faith and live it out in the world.
