Trinity Sunday

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear RFUMC Family

The UMC Book of worship says that Memorial Day is "observed the last Monday in May or the previous Sunday. This day honors the war dead of the United States. It was first celebrated in 1866 in Waterloo, New York. Many observe the day by decorating graves, especially of persons who died in war."

Wikipedia explains Memorial Day is

a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces….Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Many volunteers place an American flag on graves of military personnel in national cemeteries."

Every year as Memorial Day approaches, I find myself thinking about the words of Jesus to his disciples, recorded in John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."

I believe God gives us Memorial Day to remember the ones who loved their family, neighbors, and their country so much.

So, we have a chance to honor the people who served their country through a Memorial Day prayer during worship. (in-person worship Sign-up link here)

Also, for me, this Memorial Day is interesting because last year around Memorial Day, we all witnessed the tragic death of George Floyd.

I remember when the protest started in downtown Chicago last year a day after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis. We watched dozens of people marching and crying out for justice. I think our heart was full of grief when we watched the video of the final moments of Gorge Floyd's life.

One year later, the grief still remains. When I think about his death, I feel sad and am so overwhelmed, and I feel pain because I vividly sense the powerlessness.

Still, we are not free from the anguish, violence and anxiety. Yes, the COVID-19, vaccine has given us the freedom to start to go back to normal life. However, are we prepared to be move forward our mourning of injustice? I think this Memorial Day, we should remember what we saw last year, and have enough time to mourn our brokenness.

The author of "Mourning in America: Race and the Politics of Loss," David McIvor, also said that "Mourning is the work not only of integrating what has been lost into our personality, but also of integrating the personality itself: our fears and our hopes, our vulnerabilities and our power. To do this, we first have to overcome the defenses that dissociate us from the pain of loss – our own pain and that of others"

Our God knows our broken heart, God knows our disappointment, God knows your grief. So, bring it to God. Pray and ask God to take care of your mourning.

As we remember our grief, we will continue to challenge violence and open the door to those who have an unequal access to liberty.

Blessings

Police brutality continues unabated. So, the United Methodist Church calls on local and national governments to stop the criminalization of communities of color and to end racial/ethnic/religious profiling by law enforcement officers, among others. It also calls the church to develop resources on this issue with United States and international groups, and it calls the church to engage with other churches and local communities in speaking out publicly for police accountability regarding racial profiling, misconduct, abuse, and killings. To read more click here

Pentecost Sunday

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear RFUMC Family

Do you have Sabbath time?

In the mid-20th century, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, one of America's foremost Jewish thinkers, wrote about the sabbath, that it was the "realm of time" and the "realm of space."

His definition of the sabbath surprised me. As I spent days during the pandemic, I realized that I do not know how to spend my time. I mean, I have a packed schedule with a to do list waiting for me, and a schedule to be followed. When I am alone, I do not know how to use time and space. I feel like I lost control of my day and the tasks of work control me.

Since I was appointed to RFUMC ten months ago, when I had time, I have tried to work.  Following worship on Sunday and the then on Monday, I have time off, but I kept working and working. I thought it was the best use of my time. And finally, it made me so tired, and I felt exhausted. I found that I had used lots of time for work, but I had completed so little.

Why did this happen? I found the answer form the book, "The Unbroken Thread: Discovering the Wisdom of Tradition in an Age of Chaos."

As Rabbi Heschel said "When gaining power in the realm of space we forfeit all aspiration in the realm of time," and in that time, "the goal is not to have but to be, not to own but to give, not to control but to share, not to subdue but to be in accord."

Yes, we have the freedom to spend time for work, shopping, and socializing as much as we want, but the rabbi asks about our "inner liberty?" When we lose the rest of sabbath time, we lose our own wellness as we lose control to time and space.

What do you want when you have a time? What do you really want to do? Why do you want to do it?

This upcoming Sunday is our first in-person worship in the Japanese Garden.
I want to invite you to come to the worship, talk to God, have a full rest time in God, and
have time to think about God and God's love which give you the hours and days as a gift!

Here is a sign-up link. If you could not join this week in person, please join us online. The worship will be broadcast on both Zoom and Facebook Live.

I hope this beautiful Sunday every one of you can join us and enjoy the time of Sabbath.

Blessings
Mori.

The United States and the whole world have just learned of the guilty verdicts for the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Meanwhile, there was another officer-involved shooting of a black man in Minneapolis and the Twin Cities this week. Bishop David Bard issued the following pastoral letter urging Minnesota United Methodists to continue the long work of racial reckoning.
