Message from Pastor Mori Dear Ravenswood Fellowship UMC family Happy Summer Days! When we hear the word summer what kind of image comes to mind? Sunshine, festivals, ice-cream, barbeque parties in the yard? According to a New York Times article, this is what happens to the earth during the summer: "Tilted about 23.5 degrees, it arrives at a place in its orbit where the Northern Hemisphere leans toward the sun." And this is what happens in Wisconsin during summer: "People go outside, maybe to picnics or parks to barbecues, on day trips, on summer vacation." Summer days put some people in a good mood. As I visited several old members, I learned that many people love summer days; however, there are people who wrestle with their mood during summer. They find that their mood is more irritable, and they are agitated and unable to sleep due to summer's hot, humid weather. Psychologists describe this as summer seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is usually described as a pattern of depression that comes on in fall or winter that affects about 5% of adults in the United States annually. More people experience a milder version, like the "winter blues." People experiencing traditional fall and winter SAD tend to oversleep and overeat, but the summer version of SAD often shows up as insomnia and a reduced appetite. So, if you feel like you need a heavy curtain to block the morning sun and want to skip the picnic or vacation during the hot and humid days, this is a suggestion from Tonya Ladipo, a licensed clinical social worker: keep a mood journal to track your moods and look for patterns. If heat is dampening your mood, something as simple as a cold shower or bath may help. I agree with Tonya Ladipo's suggestion, and, also, this is Pastor Mori's suggestion: come to worship either in-person or online. Now we are worshiping in the sanctuary. Come to worship and refresh your soul, sit, pray, and listen for God. Meet the church family and we will support and pray for each other. In Matthew 19:20, Jesus says, "where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." I believe that the Holy Spirit will become a breeze in your heart and calm us. And, if you need prayer, you are welcome to submit a prayer request. (LINK HERE) During the humid hot nights, I will pray for you. Blessings MORI |
