Message from Pastor Mori Dear RFUMC Family What is your comfort food? As an immigrant, I have two kinds of comfort food. My Korean comfort food is Tteok-bokki (떡볶이) and my American comfort food is a hotdog, not just a regular one but with Ditka hot peppers! (Yes, I love spicey food) When Joe asked do you want a hotdog, I never say, "No," because it magically makes my feeling happy. And I read an article about why the Ditka Dog makes me happy. The connection between the stomach and brain is strong and it started when we were in mother's womb. According to Harvard psychiatrist and the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, "The gut and brain originate from the same cells in the embryo… it explains why stress can trigger feelings of anxiety in your mind and butterflies in your stomach" The article said that one of the significant effects on mood and mental health is good nutrition such as the Mediterranean diet. High fruit and vegetable intake predicted increased happiness. (If you want to read more here is original resource – link). As I read the article, I thought about spiritual nutrition for my soul. I think my spiritual comfort food is hymns and old songs such as "Great is Thy Faithfulness," but different than with bad food and good food, our spiritual food – such as prayer, hymns, the Bible, meditation, and journaling are all good and they are great resources for spiritual nutrition. In these cold and long winter days, I hope everyone of you eat well. Get enough nutrition for your body and mind and also find your spiritual comfort food. Listening to music, light a candle, pray and meditate, sing a hymn, walking, and petting your pet! And read the Bible and take time for yourself and God. And now I am going to get my hot dog!!
