SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear Ravenswood Fellowship Family

Thank you for your blessings and congratulations for my wedding. There are many reasons why I am thankful for my marriage, but the biggest reason is now I have my direct family in the USA!

I am deeply thankful that Joe is part of my family.  And I believe that the family is a small but very significant way of social organization that God has given to us: it stands on love and encouragement and devotion and trust. As children grow up, we have the chance to increase the size of our community. We meet neighbors and friends and  then as we go to school and church, or join clubs and groups, we experience various kinds of community. Yes, we live in community. And God loves community just as God loves individual people.

As Rev.Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day is approaching, I want to share about Dr. King's beloved community. The beloved community shows agape love, as the love of God operating in the human heart, seeks to preserve and create community.

Dr. King said, "Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice as its best is power correcting everything that stands against love."

He knew that agape love does not accept injustice or evil, rather it is the kind of love by way of justice.

I call this church "RFUMC family" because I believe that Ravenswood Fellowship is not just a gathering of Christians, we are a faith family who care about each other with agape love and we also bring agape love to the community and world. Yes, we are a beloved community. God gave us this church to remake our hospitality filled communities to be a place where justice and love ring true.

January 18 is Martin Luther King Day and also Human Rights Day and through the day we are reminded that we are a beloved community and we do our best to manifest and protect agape love toward others.

Blessings
MORI

Prayer for the peaceful transition of power.

I want to invite you to a prayer group on Jan 19, the day before the inauguration.  We saw last Wednesday the violent assault on the U.S Capitol. We were shocked and are exhausted following a week of alarming upheaval and violence. Moreover, the media reports the possibility of other protesters gathering near the day of inauguration.

If you want to share your thoughts and feelings, or discuss safety and security as a faith community, and pray for a peaceful transition, please join our Zoom talk and prayer group.

Jan 31 Lay Leader Report day

The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church explains the Lay Leader;

[A]ll Christians are called to minister wherever Christ would have them serve and witness in deeds and words that heal and free. (The Book of Discipline, ¶128)

Responsibilities of both the lay leader and the lay member of annual conference include "interpreting the actions and programs of the annual conference and the general church. Communicating the vision and needs of the local church to the annual conference and general church." This is great time to listen annual conference's 2021 goal and and vision from our lay leader, Donna Sagami. Donna will have a lay leader report on Jan 31 Sunday.

Get to Know Interim Bishop John Hopkins

With the new year, we welcome retired Bishop John L. Hopkins, who is serving as the interim bishop for the Northern Illinois Conference through 2021.

Typically we would host a meet-and-greet event or a formal welcome, but because COVID-19 prevents us from gathering we are introducing him through a Zoom interview.

Did you know Bishop Hopkins served in campus ministries? NIC Dir. of Communications Anne Marie Gerhardt "sat down" with Bishop Hopkins to ask a few questions about his background and ministry to help all of us get to know him a little better.

RFUMC will have a chance to listen to a sermon from Bishop John Hopkins (Ephiphany Cabinet Worship) on Jan 24 Sunday.

                                      Church Office Hours

We will continue to follow Governor Pritzker's guidelines during the COVID 19 pandemic. Currently, the mandate is to stay at home as much as possible.  The office staff will continue to work remotely until this mandate is lifted.  We will follow the guidelines issued by the Governor as well as the Chicago CDC and provide an update when possible.  Please be assured that the church mailbox and voicemail are checked daily.
