Charge Conference

Ravenswood Fellowship United Methodist Church

The Weekly Newsletter

   Message from Pastor Mori

Dear Ravenswood Fellowship family,

Our annual Charge Conference will be this coming Sunday, at 12 PM, via Zoom. You might be thinking, "Do I need to attend? I am not a leader of a church committee!"  But, I encourage any and all members of Ravenswood Fellowship UMC to attend!  It will be a time of information, fellowship, and celebration for us, led by our District Superintendent Rev. Brittany Isaac.

What is the charge conference?
The UMC webpage explains that "the convening of the Charge Conference as a meeting in which all members of a local United Methodist church are invited to attend and are extended the privilege of the vote. A Charge Conference is called to have broad participation of the members of the congregation. The Charge Conference may be authorized by the district superintendent."

But what exactly does the 'Charge Conference' mean? How does it matter for me? I think the charge conference is an important tradition of the United Methodist Church because it is the basic way of the connectional church to come together with all of its members invited to participate. It means we all are the church, not a building or system. You are the church. The charge conference shows the genuine Christian character of those who love the church.

Attendance is important because it is an indicator of lay involvement in the local church. In the charge conference, we will talk about our church, our boards, councils, committees, and the task forces of our ministry.

Then what will happen at the charge conference? The Book of Discipline clearly shows that  "the primary responsibility of the Charge Conference in the annual meeting shall be to review and evaluate the total mission and ministry of the church, receive reports, and adopt objectives and goals recommended by the church council that is in keeping with the objectives of The United Methodist Church (par. 247.3)." Also, in the charge conference, we will talk "UMC Now," by which I mean how daily life issues connect to UMC ministry. The Charge conference assures adherence to UM doctrinal standards and social principles and reminds us of our responsibilities as a United Methodist Congregation. A Charge Conference may also be held during the year to address the specific needs of the charge.

This is sort of a church festival, a celebration of the ministry of 2020.
I know this has been a difficult year for Ravenswood Fellowship UMC: you have had two pastor transitions, the church building has been close because of the pandemic. But you are a strong church, Ravenswood Fellowship, and the charge conference is a time to celebrate and encourage each other to go forward in our next steps of ministry.

Please use the specific charge conference Zoom link to participate.
After worship, please "Leave" Sunday Worship Zoom and join the link below at 12 PM. Please expect a delay as you enter. As soon as the SPRC meeting is complete, the District Superintendent will let you in.
