Message from Pastor Mori Dear RFUMC Family How was your holiday week? Because Christmas Eve was on Friday and I needed to prepare the following day for Sunday worship, I did not have a chance to visit Joe's family. However, Joe made a big Christmas meal for me. Ham and soup and sweet potato and bread pudding….it was so yummy, and after the whole meal, when the dessert dish came to me. I said, "I am so full, but I could not miss the dessert!" and I ate a whole dish. Is this my story only? One of the more curious phenomena during the holiday season is how we can always find room for dessert even we after we ate the main dish. So today my letter is about the biological reason that we can have a big dinner and still go for dessert. According to New York Times article the mechanism that allows us to make room for dessert is called sensory specific satiety, which means that the body has different limits for different foods as a way to help ensure a balanced intake of nutrients. "After filling up on a few rounds of prime rib, latkes, or other holiday favorites chances are you'll feel quite full. But when the pie with whipped cream or cheesecake comes around, your brain will sense an entirely different kind of food, and suddenly you'll find yourself reaching for dessert. But don't worry, while sensory specific satiety allows you to keep eating new foods, eventually your body will tell you to stop eating. After about 1500 calories in one sitting, the gut releases a hormone that causes nausea." I think our body has such a great system. Before I read the article, I would feel kind of guilty in front of my Christmas cake; how could I still want to eat a piece of cake after the big meal? But after I read the article, I changed my attitude and I stopped scolding Joe when he asked me to enjoy the whole meal. In 2021, we had so much sad news: natural disasters to gun violence, and still, we are in the crisis of COVID-19. So, here is my hope, that at least everyone has chance to enjoy the holiday season without any stress. God made us to be happy and God designed our body to have room for dessert! Our biological system allows us to have a delightful dish. I hope all the RFUMC family has a wonderful and peaceful year end season and with full nutrition as we walk together as a Christian community!! Happy New Year! Mori |
